State Parks on the Emerald Coast

Between Destin on the west and Panama City on the east, there are 6 state parks, encompassing a wide range of rare ecosystems, from coastal dunes and marshes to dune lakes. What ties them all together, however, is pristine, unspoiled, undeveloped white sand beaches and clear Emerald Coast waters. While each is different and well worth visiting, we believe that they become more beautiful the closer they are to Abaco Rose!

Henderson Beach State Park
Pristine white sugar sand beaches and more than 6,000 feet of natural scenic shoreline border the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Natural features of the park include sand pines, scrub oaks, and dune rosemary. Boardwalks provide access to the beach for swimming, sunbathing, and fishing. 35 minutes' drive west of Abaco Rose

Topsail Hill State Park

This park offers a wide variety of natural resources including 3.2 miles of secluded, white sand beaches with majestic dunes over 25 feet tall. Three rare coastal dune lakes provide excellent freshwater fishing. 30 minutes' drive west of Abaco Rose

Grayton Beach State Park
Golden in the morning sun, silvered by moonlight, Grayton Beach has consistently been ranked among the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the United States. The beach provides an idyllic setting for swimming, sunbathing, and surf fishing. Visitors can paddle a canoe or kayak on scenic Western Lake to get a closer look at a salt marsh ecosystem. A boat ramp provides access to the lake's brackish waters for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. A nature trail winds through a coastal forest where scrub oaks and magnolias, bent and twisted by salt winds, have an eerie "Middle Earth" look. Hikers and bicyclists can enjoy over four miles of trails through pine flatwoods; the trail begins across from the park entrance on Highway 30-A. Twenty minutes’ drive west of Abaco Rose.

Deer Lake State Park
This park shares its name with the coastal dune lake within its boundaries. Coastal dune lakes are extremely rare worldwide and in the United States they occur only along the Gulf Coast. Southern magnolias, golden asters, woody goldenrod, and scrub oaks can be seen in this coastal dune habitat. Rare plants such as gulf coast lupine, spoonflower, pitcher plants, and Curtiss' sand grass-one of the largest populations found in Florida-are found in the park. Visitors may see splashes of color from summer wildflowers or some of the many species of resident or migratory birds and butterflies. A boardwalk across the dunes offers easy access to the beach where visitors can picnic, swim, and fish. It also offers a spectacular view of the dune ecosystem, one of 11 natural communities found in the park. Twenty minutes’ drive west of Abaco Rose.

Camp Helen State Park
The park is bordered on three sides by the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Powell– one of the largest coastal dune lakes in Florida. Coastal dune lakes are extremely rare worldwide; in the United States they occur only along the Gulf Coast. Prehistoric middens and mounds indicate that humans lived in the area more than 4,000 years ago. Natural areas range from coastal dunes and salt marshes along the Gulf to freshwater wetlands and sand pine scrub along the lake. Activities include swimming, beachcombing, nature study, hiking, and both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Fifteen minutes’ walk on the beach from Abaco Rose.

St. Andrews State Park
Well known for its sugar white sands and emerald green waters, this park has over one-and-a-half miles of beaches on the Gulf of Mexico and Grand Lagoon. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, and canoeing. Two fishing piers, a jetty, and a boat ramp provide ample fishing opportunities for anglers. Two nature trails wind through a rich diversity of coastal plant communities - a splendid opportunity for bird-watching. Those wanting to relax can sunbathe on the beach or enjoy a leisurely lunch under the shade of a picnic pavilion. A concession offers snacks, souvenirs, and fishing amenities. Shell Island Boat Tours are available during the spring and summer. Thirty minutes’ drive east from Abaco Rose.

Diving

Thanks to an abundance of natural, historical and artificial reefs, Panama City Beach, just east of Abaco Rose, is known as the "Wreck Capital of the South." The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico encourage rapid growth, making the area an excellent home and breeding ground for all types of sea life. Sea turtles, giant manta rays, puffer fish, sand dollars, blue marlin and horseshoe crab are just a few of the species that inhabit these emerald waters.

Historic wrecks include a 441-foot World War II Liberty ship; a 220-foot tug, The Chippewa; a 160-foot coastal freighter, the S.S. Tarpon; the 100-foot tug, The Chickasaw; and the 110-foot tug, The Grey Ghost; as well as the Gulf of Mexico's most famous wreck, the 465-foot Empire Mica.

A community-coordinated project with Panama City Marine Institute has developed 50 artificial reefs off Panama City Beach. These include Stage I, Stage II, fifteen 160-foot long and 35-foot high bridge spans, ten barges, the City of Atlantis, the LOSS Project and many more. The natural reefs range in depth from 80 to 100 feet and are just a few miles offshore. These reefs range in height from three to eight feet and are teeming with sea life, including small corals and colorful sponges. Closer to shore, the jetties at St. Andrews State Park are popular snorkeling sites.

The best time of the year for diving in the waters off Panama City Beach is April through September. Parties of up to 30 people can enjoy both inshore and offshore diving. Crafts include 32-foot to 48-foot fiberglass customized and converted crew boats and all carry U.S. Coast Guard approved safety equipment. Several full-service dive shops in the area offer customized packages and snorkeling gear.
